Soroptimist International at the United Nations

Soroptimist International has General Consultative Status with United Nations (UN) Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and is accredited with the UN Department of Global Communications, the UN Environmental Program and the Commonwealth.

SI also holds consultative status with United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).

SI has Special List status with the International Labor Organisation (ILO) and is recognised by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO).

Soroptimist International’s Representatives to the UN work in coalitions, committees and working groups with other Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), often assuming leadership roles, to make a greater impact for all women and girls.

These include the following Major Groups and other Stakeholders:

Women for Water Partnership

Soroptimist International works in partnership with Women for Water Partnership (WfWP).

WfWP supports women and girls in developing leadership skills across the water sector. With 28 member organisations, WfWP uses water as a gateway to gender equality and improved access for all.

At the global level, WfWP advocates for women and girls in international policy spaces, including the UN. A partner since 2015, Soroptimist International collaborates with WfWP on local projects, joint UN statements and events focused on clean water, sanitation, and inclusive leadership.

Every Woman Treaty

Soroptimist International works in partnership with Every Woman Treaty.

Every Woman Treaty is a global coalition of over 3,800 women’s rights advocates and organisations across 147 countries, working to advance an Optional Protocol to CEDAW aimed at ending violence against women and girls. Since 2022, Soroptimist International has been a member of the coalition to promote a binding international treaty to ensure greater protection and accountability.

At the 68th UN Commission on the Status of Women, Soroptimist International hosted a parallel event highlighting the urgent need for this protocol—addressing how poverty, climate change, and violence intersect to harm women and girls. A new Optional Protocol would hold governments accountable and strengthen legal protections, building on CEDAW’s proven global influence. Soroptimist International remains committed to this cause, advocating at all levels to end violence against women and girls.
