International Days
UN International Observance Days are specific days designated by the United Nations (UN) to raise awareness and promote action on important political, social, cultural, humanitarian, or environmental issues. These observances aim to educate the public, mobilise political will, and celebrate human achievements and diversity.
Soroptimist International proudly celebrates a few key UN observance days, especially those that focus on women and girls. These occasions highlight issues of gender equality and provide an opportunity to showcase how Soroptimist International is working globally to support, educate, enable and empower all women and girls around the world.
The International Day of the Girl Child, observed annually on 11 October, was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2011 to recognise the unique challenges girls face around the world and to promote their rights and empowerment. Soroptimist International marks this important day by highlighting and showcasing its global efforts to support girls through education, mentoring, advocacy and grassroot projects that empower them to reach their full potential.
