Soroptimist International is a global volunteer movement whose mission is to transform the lives and status of women and girls through education, empowerment and enabling opportunities.
With nearly 65,000 members in 136 countries, Soroptimist International strives to:
• Advance gender equality
• Promote and support access to education, training and healthcare
• Support economic empowerment opportunities for women
• Raise awareness of and address violence against women and girls
• Support and expand digital access and learning opportunities for women and girls

SI History

Since the founding of the very first Soroptimist club in Oakland, California in 1921, Soroptimist International (SI) has sought to bring about change to the lives of women and girls worldwide. Now, we have five international Federations, nearly 66,000 members and Clubs in 118 countries and territories.

Through global advocacy, partnerships and projects managed by Soroptimist International Foundation we ensure that the voice of women and girls is heard, amplified and actioned at every level. Our commitment to advancing and upholding the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to help women and girls realise their full potential is evidenced by the impactful projects that we fund and deliver including local initiatives to global programmes Soroptimist International is one of the few NGOs with General Consultative Status at the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

This status allows us to advocate for women’s rights ensuring their consideration and inclusion across all areas of work undertaken by ECOSOC. With this status Soroptimist International can extends it’s sphere of influence through its permanent representation at seven UN centres and participation in key UN events such as the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).

Our five Federations around the world are all members of Soroptimist International. This structure enables inclusion and ensures that we remain a powerful global force in amplifying women’s voices; driving meaningful change Locally, Nationally and Internationally.
