Older Women’s Universal Right to Economic Security

March 29, 2022

24 March | Organised by Soroptimist International, Global Alliance for the Rights of Older People.
HOSTED BY: THE GLOBAL ALLIANCE FOR THE RIGHTS OF OLDER PEOPLE & SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL

Many older women, particularly those in developing countries, remain illiterate because they did not have opportunities to attend school. When they have no schooling, they have few employment opportunities. Without a job, how can they accumulate savings? How can they earn a pension if there is no form of social protection? Because of a lifetime of discrimination, women end up with few savings and assets to help them with old age. According to a recent study by Age International, “globally, older women in all their diversity are contributing unrecognized yet critical support to their families, communities and economies through their paid and unpaid work.”
